File Compatibility
i.Compatible File Types
PNG can be used beside other file types when a workflow needs both rendered raster artwork and editable, scalable, document, or machine-specific information. Compatibility means the files can serve related purposes in the same workflow, not that they are interchangeable.
Common companion file types
File type Relationship to PNG PSD or layered source Preserves editable raster layers, masks, effects, and text SVG, AI, or EPS Preserves scalable vector artwork and may provide cut paths PDF Can package artwork, dimensions, pages, vectors, text, and production notes TIFF Alternative raster exchange format for workflows requiring features not carried in the delivered PNG DXF Provides geometric paths for compatible cutting, laser, or CNC workflows DST, PES, EXP, JEF, or VP3 Carries digitized embroidery stitch information rather than PNG pixels STL, 3MF, or STEP Carries 3D geometry rather than a flat raster image ii.Required File Types
PNG is the required production file only when the platform, maker, or selected process explicitly requests PNG raster artwork. Some jobs require PNG plus another file, while others use a different production format entirely.
A companion file may be required for:
- A vector cut contour for print-and-cut work
- Editable source artwork for corrections or personalization
- A product template or placement proof
- A digitized stitch file for embroidery
- Vector paths for vinyl cutting, laser cutting, or CNC routing
- 3D geometry for additive manufacturing
Do not create an unnecessary companion file when the maker has approved the PNG as the complete production input.
iii.Recommended File Types
Retain an editable source and deliver the simplest production package that completely supports the job. The recommended source depends on how the artwork was created and whether future resizing, text changes, color correction, or path editing may be needed.
Common recommendations include:
- PNG plus PSD or another native layered file for raster artwork that may need revision
- PNG plus SVG, AI, EPS, or PDF for logos, typography, or shapes that may need scaling
- PNG plus a dedicated vector contour for printed pieces that will be cut
- PNG plus a placement proof when the production file has transparency or an unusual crop
- The maker-requested machine format when PNG is only a visual reference
iv.Alternative File Types
Choose an alternative when the job requires information PNG cannot represent or when another format better fits the receiving workflow.
Alternatives by requirement
Requirement Possible alternative Scalable paths and editable shapes SVG, AI, EPS, or PDF Layered raster editing PSD, TIFF, or the application's native format Multi-page instructions or proofs PDF Embroidery machine instructions DST, PES, EXP, JEF, or VP3 3D model geometry STL, 3MF, or STEP Cutting or machining geometry SVG, DXF, AI, EPS, PDF, or the requested machine format Photographs where small delivery size matters more than lossless encoding A maker-approved photographic format such as JPEG
