PNG is best suited to applications that benefit from lossless raster image storage, transparency, sharp pixel-defined edges, or preservation of the encoded image information without lossy compression.

Transparent Raster Artwork

PNG is particularly well suited to raster artwork that requires a transparent background or partially transparent areas.

Common examples include:

  • isolated artwork
  • logos exported as raster images
  • decorative graphics
  • overlays
  • product graphics
  • digital illustrations
  • production artwork without a visible rectangular background

PNG supports alpha transparency, allowing pixels to represent varying levels of opacity rather than being limited to fully visible or fully transparent states.

This makes PNG useful when artwork needs to appear over different:

  • website backgrounds
  • mockups
  • materials or substrates

Graphics With Sharp Edges

PNG is well suited to raster graphics containing clearly defined edges, including:

Lossless compression avoids the block artifacts, ringing, and edge degradation that can occur when similar graphics are encoded using lossy compression.

Raster Artwork Requiring Lossless Storage

PNG is appropriate when raster image information needs to be stored without intentional degradation caused by lossy compression.

  • intermediate image assets
  • artwork exchanged between compatible applications

A PNG export should not necessarily replace the original editable source file. Native design files may contain layers, text, paths, effects, or other editable information that PNG does not preserve.

PNG is particularly useful in compatible production workflows where the visible artwork must be separated from the background.
