Common Does Not Mean Best
A file format may be commonly used in an application without being the best format for every version of that application.
For example:
- PNG is commonly used for logos, but an SVG or another vector source may be preferable when the logo needs to scale or remain editable.
- PNG is commonly used for photographs online, but JPEG, WebP, or AVIF may provide substantially smaller files depending on the application.
- PNG may be accepted by a production system, but another format may preserve information the workflow requires.
- PNG can contain text visually, but the text is represented as raster image information rather than editable text.
File selection should therefore be based on the information the workflow needs to preserve, not simply on whether an application can open the file.
