Related File Types
Related file types either preserve information that PNG does not contain, provide an alternative raster representation, or carry the machine-specific data needed after PNG artwork leaves the design stage.
File-type relationships
| File type | Relationship to PNG | Learn next when |
|---|---|---|
| JPG or JPEG | Lossy raster alternative without alpha transparency | Photographic file size matters more than exact lossless reconstruction |
| TIFF | Raster alternative that can support production and archival workflows with different feature requirements | A printer or prepress workflow specifically requests TIFF |
| PSD | Editable layered raster source | The PNG must remain revisable or preserve masks, text, effects, and layers |
| SVG | Scalable vector artwork and paths | The design needs resizing, cutting, or editable geometry |
| AI or EPS | Professional vector source and interchange formats | A maker or printer requests editable vector artwork |
| Document container that may preserve vectors, text, pages, dimensions, and production notes | A complete print or proof package is required | |
| DXF | Geometric exchange file | Cutting, laser, or CNC geometry is needed |
| DST, PES, EXP, JEF, or VP3 | Embroidery stitch instructions | PNG artwork must be digitized for embroidery |
| STL, 3MF, or STEP | Three-dimensional geometry | The product is made through 3D printing or another model-based workflow |
