Material Properties

PNG has no physical material properties. It has no weight, thickness, hardness, flexibility, temperature limit, coating, texture, chemical resistance, or durability because it is a digital image format.

Material properties belong to the blank or stock selected for production. The same PNG may produce different results across materials because surface color, composition, coating, texture, absorbency, reflectivity, and heat response affect the process.

Digital information versus material information

PNG can describePNG does not describe
Pixel color samplesMaterial color or actual printed color
Transparency informationWhether a substrate is transparent or opaque
Pixel dimensionsProduct dimensions or printable area
Optional color metadataCoating, ink, transfer, or adhesion compatibility
Optional physical pixel intentHeat, pressure, laser, or chemical tolerance

Compatibility must therefore be validated as PNG artwork plus production method plus machine plus material plus product.
