Preparing
i.Production Requirements
Treat the production provider's specification as a delivery contract. Confirm the accepted format, dimensions, resolution, profile, transparency, file-size limit, naming rules, and any companion files before final export.
Production handoff checklist
Requirement Confirm Product Exact item, variant, orientation, and printable area Method The selected process accepts raster PNG artwork Image Correct pixel dimensions and effective resolution Color Requested RGB profile and proof expectations Transparency Background and alpha behavior are intentional Companion files Cut path, template, instructions, or source file if required ii.File Organization
Organize the editable source, production export, previews, references, and archived revisions separately. A maker should be able to identify the current production file without opening several nearly identical exports.
A practical project structure may include:
- Source, for editable working files
- Production, for the approved PNG and required companion files
- Preview, for mockups and review images that are not production files
- Reference, for templates, specifications, and instructions
- Archive, for superseded versions that should not be produced
iii.Naming Conventions
Use names that identify the design, product or placement, size or variant, revision, and file purpose. Keep names concise and machine-friendly.
Recommended pattern:
- design-product-placement-variant-v01.png
- Use letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores consistently
- Avoid final-final, ambiguous dates, and unexplained abbreviations
- Increase the version when production artwork changes
- Mark obsolete exports as archived rather than leaving them beside the approved file
iv.Export Requirements
Export from the highest-quality approved source at the required final pixel dimensions. PNG compression is lossless, so a higher compression setting should affect encoding time and file size rather than intentionally lowering image quality.
The final export should:
- Match the required width, height, and orientation
- Use transparency only when intended
- Contain the requested color profile when supported
- Exclude guides, templates, notes, and hidden alternatives
- Stay within the platform or maker file-size limit
- Be reopened and inspected after export
v.Quality Checks
Review the exported PNG itself, not only the editable source. This catches export-specific changes and confirms that the delivered file is the file that was approved.
Complete these checks:
- Open the exported file in a second compatible viewer
- Verify pixel dimensions, orientation, and file extension
- Inspect at 100 percent for jagged edges, blur, halos, and stray pixels
- Preview against multiple backgrounds when transparency is present
- Check spelling, placement, safe areas, and bleed
- Confirm color profile behavior and compare with an approved proof when applicable
- Verify the correct revision and remove obsolete production exports
